Bright Spot Ventures Horticultural Supervisor

Description

Bright Spot Ventures is a social enterprise to empower and employ youth currently or formerly involved in the foster care system. The young staff members manage several small businesses, receive employment training, and are placed in a variety of externships in order to gain the necessary skills to successfully transition into adulthood. The Bright Spot Ventures Horticultural Supervisor will be involved in daily operations of the enterprise, providing vital assistance and tying together program components as it grows. Working directly with the staff members to enhance their professional development is essential to the position. Responsibilities: The Horticultural Supervisor will have a major role in the daily operations of the Bright Spot Ventures Urban Farm, the Wilmington Farmer’s Market at Cool Spring Park and the job training component of the program. o Urban Farming: Manage the daily operations of the Bright Spot Ventures Urban Farm at Rodney Reservoir and maintain a safe working environment. 1. Assign BSV youth staff duties to assist in the cultivation, maintenance and harvest of produce grown on the farm. 2. Prepares daily schedule for BSV youth staff members. 3. Supervise staff as they work at the farm, observe farm’s facilitates to ascertain condition and ensure the continuity of daily operations. o Farmer’s Market: Coordinate and manage the operations of Wilmington’s Farmer’s Market at Cool Spring Park (runs weekly June – October). 1. Work directly with individual vendors to collect weekly fees, ensure proper set-up and break down and maintain positive working relationships. 2. Assign BSV youth staff duties to assist in the set-up, execution and break down of weekly market including selling produce from the urban farm as a vendor. 3. Oversee operations of and manage activities for each market including staff, volunteers, music, food demos, educational events and community partners. o Job Training: Work directly with BSV youth staff members as they develop their employability skills and professionalism. Trains BSV youth staff in horticulture duties in order to prepare staff members to work productively on the farm and for entry level employment in a related field. 2. Trains BSV youth staff in customer service, sales and management in order to prepare staff members to work productively at the Wilmington Farmer’s Market. 3. Schedules external trainers to provide additional lessons to BSV staff. 4. Coach staff members as they create resumes, prepare for interviews, and apply for externships and employment. Requirements: o Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work well with diverse groups of people. o Creative self-starter, comfortable taking initiative. o Demonstrated leadership experience. Ability to manage others and develop and maintain professional working relationships with staff and employees. o Strong agricultural background and interest in growing produce preferred. o Commitment to the mission of Bright Spot Ventures. Interest in providing employment training to young people and/or improving access to nutrition among low-income families. Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with experience along with a generous benefit package.
