Natural Lands Steward


General Description: The Natural Lands Steward is responsible for a broad range of activities in support of the Natural Lands Manager for the continued preservation of Piedmont biodiversity in various habitats within lands owned by Mt. Cuba Center. In these areas, work includes a variety of flora and fauna habitat restoration tasks, such as exotic plant suppression and silviculture. Major Duties, Responsibilities and Essential Functions:  Assists in the training and management of seasonal staff and interns.  Assists with the planning of projects and ordering of materials  Maintains current pesticide practices and herbicide treatment records.  Monitors natural areas for presence of alien and invasive plant species. Utilizes current best management practices for invasive plant suppression.  Monitors and maintains bird nest boxes throughout natural lands.  Monitors visitor use areas, such as interpretive trails and parking areas to ensure a safe experience.  Assists with wildlife and vegetation monitoring.  Leads visitor events such as volunteer workdays and interpretive hikes.  Aggressively maintains plants in restoration areas to meet project goals.  Ability to independently lift 50 lbs.  Ability to stand independently for extended periods of time.  Ability to safely and effectively operate and maintain a wide range of hand tools, power tools, vehicles and equipment is required. Qualifications, Skills and Other Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, conservation biology, natural resource management, or related study.  Minimum 3 years related work experience in land stewardship, restoration ecology, or biological field work.  Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation and ecological land management.  Ability to safely and effectively operate and maintain a wide range of hand tools, power tools, vehicles and equipment.  Knowledge of regional bird species and habitat preferences desirable.  Strong research skills; fluency with internet information searches.  Self-motivated, organized, attentive to details and the ability to effectively function without close supervision.  Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to both co-workers and outside contractors.Qualifications, Skills and Other Requirements continued:  Candidates must possess a passion for Mt. Cuba Center’s conservation mission, restoration of natural communities, wildflowers and native flora and fauna.  Ability and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions is essential.  Ability and willingness to work weekends, holidays and special events as needed.  Valid driver’s license. The position will be offered on condition of meeting the predetermined essential physical requirements for the job. A medical examination is required.
